How much does handcrafted furniture cost?

Bespoke, handcrafted, made-to-measure, original, or personalised: call it what you like.

There’s a lot of work that goes into creating a unique and individual freestanding piece of furniture. The kind of furniture you can show off to your friends because you know for a fact it’s a one-off.

The benefits of buying bespoke furniture are huge and numerous. Having complete control over materials and design is one of the biggest.

Many people assume handcrafted furniture is way out of their price range when actually costs can be competitive.

When you’re thinking about commissioning a bespoke item of furniture, it’s important to understand exactly what you’re getting for your money. Here’s a quick rundown…

Taking the brief

This usually involves a home visit to measure the space, weigh up the surroundings and discuss what you’d like to achieve. We make sketches and take photographs. If you own a treasured ornament you want to fit in a cubby hole, or a pair of boots that need to live in your shoe cupboard, tell us and we’ll design to fit.

Personal input

With bespoke furniture you can be completely involved in what the finished product looks like. Share your preferences with us. Show us pictures on Pinterest (which we love!). From ultra modern to Tudor inspired, shabby chic to country cottage, we’ll do our best to match it. The result is something totally unique to you, which you’ll want to show off to your friends.

Design time

Having taken our brief, we transform our initial sketches into a selection of 3D computerised designs for you to choose from. Not every furniture maker does this. We believe time spent at this stage ensures everyone can visualise what the finished piece will look like.

Sourcing quality materials

We spend time researching the best and highest quality materials to do the job. Our preference is to try and source these locally and ethically. This can involve conversations with sawmills, reclamation yards and lots of online research. All the time, working within the specified budget.

This handcrafted table is more than 110 years old.

It’s sturdy, practical and absolutely beautiful. It just shows how durable handcrafted furniture can stand the test of time.

Labour

As you’d expect, creating bespoke furniture takes time, care and precise attention to detail. Our time and skills are what you’re investing in. For us it’s not just about working with power tools, wood, nails and paint. We are trained upholsterers and love discovering new and innovative techniques, designs and finishes.

Made to measure

Our aim is not just to ensure the piece fits into the space in which it’s destined to live, we also match the finish to your existing interior décor (fabric, paint) and other pieces of furniture in the room, so everything ties in together. If you’d prefer it to stand out from the crowd, we can do this too!

Communication

We’ll keep in touch and give you updates on how the build is going, sending photographs if you wish. We might also be in touch to ask you to choose the finishing touches – things like handles, legs or linings.

The outcome?

At the end of the process you’ll have an individual piece of furniture that’s built to last, made from solid wood and quality materials. You’ll get years of service out of bespoke designed furniture. Such durable pieces very quickly become family heirlooms that can be passed down through the generations.

Creating a legacy. Isn’t that worth investing in? We think so.

If you agree, we’d love to chat. Contact us to discuss your bespoke furniture design project.
